Sr. Director - Software Engineering

Capital One’s Enterprise Data business unit drives the company’s data strategy, focusing on governance, analytics, and AI integration to support banking innovations. It operates under a “You Build, Your Data” model that balances team autonomy with centralized standards.

Capital One is seeking a Sr. Director of Data Engineering to work in our Enterprise Data organization. This individual will be leading teams delivering and expanding capabilities that drive core data management functions for understanding and managing our diverse data ecosystem, while driving data engineering best practices. The candidate will also be responsible for designing new solutions to ensure that Capital One is able to increasingly scale across its ever growing data footprint. 

This leader must have the ability to attract and recruit the industry’s best talent, and simultaneously have the technical chops to ensure that we build compelling, customer oriented solutions in an iterative methodology. Success in the role requires an innovative mind, a proven track record of delivering next generation software and data applications, rigorous analytical skills, and a passion for creating market-leading capabilities that integrate automation, machine learning, and predictive analytics.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a change agent, driving our data strategy and capabilities forward to deliver trusted, well managed quality data experiences for all data stewards and stakeholders

  • Focus on building leading-edge capabilities in support of ensuring world-class experiences for data producers and consumers with enterprise platforms

  • Partner with Product and Design teams to strategize and build leading technology solutions 

  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies and market trends in data, applying learnings to improve our business and customer experience

  • Drive a forward-looking data strategy that can realize long-term and commercial objectives

  • Lead a data organization of approximately 36+ engineers

  • Commitment to high-quality delivery, engineering excellence, and uncompromising operations

  • Able to continuously optimize for cost and performance

  • Ensure the durability of a modern data stacks at Enterprise scale

  • Successfully manage an engaged and sophisticated set of business and technology customers who possess a strong understanding of and high expectations regarding data

  • As a transformational leader, recruit, nurture and retain top talent, building a world-class engineering team within the enterprise technology organization

  • Serve as an inspiring role model, a leader the team wants to emulate

  • Drive the team to understand, challenge and improve the technologies through which Capital One leverages data and predictive analytics

  • Lead efforts to deploy new and existing applications into AWS environments and provide operational support for  the applications. 

  • Conduct design and code review to ensure compliance with standards

  • Establish a trusted, close touch relationship with divisional data leaders

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Engineering

  • At least 9 years of experience in software engineering or data engineering

  • At least 7 years of people management experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science or Engineering

  • Experience managing the tech strategy for an organization’s product

  • 5+ years of experience in AWS or public-cloud technologies.

  • 5+ years of experience in building or managing large scale data consumption, management or governance.

  • 5+ years of experience leading multi-functional data engineering teams and full stack teams

  • 5+ years of experience with Spark or other big data processing technologies

  • 5+ years experience with Python and/or Java

  • 5+ years of experience with full stack development with a focus on data applications

  • 5+ years of experience with running high-availability, highly resilient platforms
